Beethoven’s only opera, “Fidelio,” was based on the heroics of a woman. Premiering after the French Revolution, the opera’s themes of liberation and political abuses fit perfectly then (as now), as war encompassed Europe, and Napoleon had just been defeated.
Beethoven’s powerful “Leonore” Overture No. 3 was one of several overtures Beethoven composed for his “Fidelio” opera, and this version is the most exciting. Beethoven had envisioned his perfect wife as heroic and powerful and “Fidelio” was an ode to this dream, as Leonore dared to cross dress to impersonate a prison guard with the plan to rescue her husband from death from the evil prison governor, Don Pizarro. Leonore’s husband, Florestan, lays helpless in prison, hallucinating that his angel, Leonore, is coming to rescue him. Leonore then appears as Fidelio, a prison guard, who saves Florestan by brandishing a gun to rescue her beloved husband. The opera ends with everyone rejoicing in Leonore’s bravery. Once again, Beethoven was WAY ahead of his time, tackling themes of political injustice and women’s rights, along with powerful music – a perfect topic for March “Women’s History Month.”
