CINCO DE MAYO is the Famous May 5th Mexican Holiday Celebrating the Anniversary of the Mexican Victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

In 1862, Mexican President Benito Juarez decided that all foreign debt payments would be put on hold for 2 years. Mexico arranged an agreement with Britain and Spain, but Napolean III decided the French wanted to take advantage of this debt to attack Mexico and establish control in a Latin country to favor the French interests.  The French attacked Mexico and on May 5, 1862 Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza and his troops defeated the French in the famous battle in Puebla.
