AMAZONS MYTHOLOGY

The AMAZONS were a nation of FIERCE WOMEN WARRIORS who CUT OFF THEIR RIGHT BREAST so they could shoot the bow and arrow more easily in war!

In Greek Mythology, the Amazons were a nation of women warriors, ruled by a queen. In the 400's B.C., Greeks believed that the Amazons were barbaric and non-Greek. No men were permitted to live in their country, which was located on the south coast of the Black Sea. The name "Amazon" came from the Greek "a-mazos", which means "without a breast", because the Amazons allegedly cut off their right breast so they could shoot better with a bow and arrow in war. The Amazons were violent, dominating, totally tyrannical, yet beautiful.

The Amazons lived in Asia Minor (peninsula of Western Asia, between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea), where women fought and governed and the men were subjugated to perform household duties. Amazon women had to kill an enemy in battle to prove she was a true Amazon. Girls born to Amazons were brought up by the Amazons and male children were sent back to their fathers. Some men were kept for mating purposes, but had the status of SLAVES, and were only allowed to do the tasks which would be done by women in other countries. Allegedly, these mens' legs and arms were mutilated to prevent them from challenging the Amazons.

The Amazons invaded Greece, the Arabian Peninsula, Egypt, Libya, Asia Minor, Syria, Phrygia and Thrace. They fought on foot and horseback, carrying shields, spears, bows, arrows and axes. Their days consisted of hunting and war exercises. The Amazon Queen Hippolyta owned the golden girdle, which was a symbol of her royal power, given to her by the God Ares: the God of War.

All throughout history there have been societies where women have more importance than men and the mothers rights exceed the fathers. This is called "MATRIARCHATE" and most likely the myth of the Amazon Women Warriors came from tales of those societies.
