DE VOLKSKRANT FEATURES THE GREAT KAT

By Robert van Gijssel, De Volkskrant

A new hero, a phenomenon so excellent that you can't imagine the previous years have been possible. The Great Kat is her alias, Katherine Thomas is her real name. This New York guitar vampire dominatrix tears through everything, but prefers the classics. She puts her teeth into Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, violates Beethoven and Rossini as in her newly published Beethoven's Guitar Shred DVD. The Fifth Symphony goes by in acceleration. Kat then throws herself into Caprice No. 24 of Paganini, crying in metal. The setting for the videos are entirely eighties metal: latex and S&M, fire, blood and Satan. The DVD is likely to be a cult hit, is high in the sales lists and surprised the music market. "Great Kat's top ten fastest shredders of all time", wrote Guitar One magazine with a gasp. "A beautiful mix of rock, Classical, hemoglobin, sex and terror", said the blog Supermexicanos. But in the U.S., NBC talk show Late Night With Jimmy Fallon was the most beautiful voice: "This woman plays Beethoven as intended: incredibly fast and soaked in blood.

The emotion is palpable: the shredding is really back.
