- "Wagner's War" CD Review in Tin Foil Music Magazine
-
-
-
- Holy shit!!!
-
- Say what you will about the hyped up "Genius of the 21st century" image, and
frown on the scantily-clad death-metal babe look if you want - but the Great Kat can play
a MEAN guitar!
-
- Kat, who plays not only one of the fastest guitars on the planet, but also a shredding
violin, has put together a collection of classics and original material that just kills.
The new disc, "Wagner's War", comes in three Acts; Act One opening up with a
ripping arrangement of Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" ("Die
Walkure", the second of Wagner's Rings) - layered guitars with all manner of horns,
thundering drums, vocals, and the like. Next come two original trax by Kat that feature
super-effected vocals, death-metal rhythms, banshee screams, and an absolutely psychotic
lead guitar.
-
- Act Two explodes with "Punishment" and "Humiliation", which sound
like Wendy O singing over a Beethoven and Paganini inspired death-metal.
-
- Act Three then comes rushing in with a 2 hyper minutes of Franz Liszt's "Hungarian
Rhapsody" followed immediately with Kat's light speed guitar and violin taking center
stage for Sarasate's "Zapateado", which ends the set.
-
- The entire disc clocks in at under 15 minute, but don't let that fool you. The disc is
well worth the price - and besides, we mere mortals couldn't handle much more
classical-metal insanity at one time!
-
- Kat's fearless attitude in taking on such virtuosic pieces from the likes of Liszt and
Sarasate (Lizst is the sole reason piano players don't play with their backs to the stage
and is still considered one of the best pianists who ever lived, while Sarasate, who was a
child prodigy and helped set a standard for violinists' level of technical excellence, is
thought of as one of Spain's greatest musical export) is more than commendable - it's
downright intimidating. Her pristine technique and flawless execution make "Wagner's
War" not only an enjoyable listening experience; it sets a modern standard of
excellence for the shred guitarist.
