She's The Great Kat, the virtuoso violinist and guitarist of metal who shreds all classical artists such as Beethoven, Paganini, Vivaldi, Mozart, Bach ... She plays their parts at the speed of light and one day she had had a vision that music classical was dead and the only way to resuscitate it was to play it in a heavy metal key at the speed of light. She is quite a character, genius and figure, but her extensive classical training allows her to reach extreme speeds that few are able to reach. TMC: How do you define your music?

 

TGK: “SHRED/CLASSICAL” MUSIC: The Great Kat’s unique mixture of authentic Classical Music (Beethoven, Wagner, Vivaldi, Paganini, Bach, Rossini, Sarasate, Liszt, Chopin, etc.) with virtuoso shredding guitars, raw, vicious metal arrangements for band, blistering violin virtuosity, orchestral instrumentation, insanely fast tempos, and outrageous imagery!

 

TMC: Why did you change the violin for the guitar? When did you start playing guitar?

 

TGK: After graduating from The Juilliard School as a violin virtuoso I decided that Classical Music was DEAD and desperately needed to be UPDATED for the MASSES!!!! After listening to popular music forms, I discovered metal and quickly picked up the electric guitar. I simply took my PAGANINI-STYLE violin technique (a special left-hand technique I learned at Juilliard) and transposed it to the guitar. I added VICIOUS STRONG accenting and attacks which is used in BOTH METAL and BEETHOVEN’S MUSIC. Then I began transcribing EXACT Classical Music scores for the guitar and band. NOW GO AND GENIUSIZE with The Great Kat’s DEMONIC GUITAR and VIOLIN VIRTUOSITY on PAGANINI’S “CAPRICE #24” and “THE FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLE-BEE” from “Beethoven’s Guitar Shred” DVD.

 

TMC: Some people think that Great Kat is one of the 80’s icons. Do you agree?

 

 

TGK: Yes!! The Great Kat is one of the ICONS of the 80’s and of TODAY!!!!! The Great Kat is the ONLY GUITAR GOD SINGLE-HANDEDLY and SYSTEMATICALLY UPDATING CLASSICAL MUSIC FOR THE MASSES and BRINGING this genius music to the WORLD.

 

TMC: Vivaldi, Paganini, Beethoven… All of them played at the speed of light! Does Great Kat love classical music and velocity? Is this the best “marriage”?

TMC: Do you think “Metal Messiah” is the greatest Great Kat’s hit?

TMC: Lots of fans and press consider you as one of the fastest guitar players of the world. Do you still train your velocity?

 

TG: The Great Kat practices a variety of virtuoso and speed building techniques with scales, arpeggios, etudes, etc. on the guitar AND violin. I also transcribe violin scores from Paganini, Sarasate, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Wieniawski, etc. to the guitar and shred these genius masterpieces on BOTH guitar AND violin. I build speed SLOWLY using a metronome and work up the tempo with total precision and accuracy.

 

 

 

 

TMC: Do you think the 80’s metal scene was very male chauvinistic?

 

 

TGK: The Great Kat KICKED the BUTTS of all those MALE CHAUVINISTS by being a HIGHLY-TRAINED VIOLIN and GUITAR VIRTUOSO with IMPECCABLE TECHNIQUE!

TMC: Es todo un placer poderte entrevistar. ¿Qué está haciendo The Great Kat en la actualidad?

TGK: The Great Kat está predicando la religión en todo el mundo de destripar la música clásica. The Great Kat ha sido galardonada “Top 10 De los guitarristas más rápidos de todos los tiempos” (Guitar One Magazine), los 50 guitarristas más rápidos de los tiempos de la revista Guitar World Magazine, está en el Top 10 de los 100 guitar héroes más salvajes en Classic Rock Magazine y en el Top 12 de las más grandes mujeres guitarristas en Elle Magazine. The Great Kat sé graduó con el título de virtuosa de violín y concertista en Julliard. También ganó el título de violinista solista en el Artist International Competition Violin/Carnegie Recital Hall Debut.

Ahora he sacado el nuevo DVD llamado Great Kat Shred/Classical disponible en Itunes. Interpreto temas como “The Flight Of The Bumble-Bee”, ¡¡en la que toco a 300 BPMs!! Toco también la “Quinta Sinfonía de Beethoven”, el “Capricho nº24” de Paganini y el Concierto de Brandenburgo de Bach en el que llego a tocar seis guitarras diferentes.

TMC: ¿Cómo defines tu música?

TGK: “Shred/Classical Music, o sea, música clásica destripada. The Great Kat es la única persona capaz de mezclar la música clásica de Beethoven, Wagner, Vivaldi, Paganini, Bach, Rossini, Sarasate, Liszt, Chopin… con las guitarras eléctricas cortantes, crudas, los viciosos arreglos de una banda de heavy metal, un violín devastador, orquestación clásica, tiempos ultraveloces demenciales e imaginería extravagante.

TMC: ¿Cuándo empezaste a tocar la guitarra y por qué decidiste pasarte a ella si toda la vida habías tocado el violín?

TGK: Después de graduarme en la prestigiosa escuela Julliard vi que la música clásica estaba muerta, ¡así que desesperadamente tuve que actualizarla para las masas! Después de escuchar todas las formas posibles de música popular me decanté por el metal y rápidamente adapté mi virtuosismo hacia la guitarra eléctrica. Para mi fue simple pues adapté la técnica, especialmente la de la mano izquierda de Paganini aprendida en Julliard, y me lancé a tocar la guitarra eléctrica. Le añadí una “fuerza viciosa” al estilo acentuando los ataques ya que ambos son los mismos tanto en la música clásica como en la música de Beethoven. Luego me dediqué a transcribir fidedignamente la música clásica a las partituras de guitarra y los arreglos para el resto de la banda. Puedes apreciarlo perfectamente en mi versión de “El Capricho nº24” de Paganini o en “El vuelo del moscardón” de Korsakov.

TMC: Mucha gente considera a The Great Kat como im icono de los 80, ¿estás de acuerdo?

TGK: Sí, estoy de acuerdo, ¡The Great Kat es uno de los iconos de los 80 pero también de la actualidad! Ella es la única diosa de la guitarra que ha crecido sin ningún tipo de ayudas y que sistemáticamente ha ido actualizando la música clásica para las masas. Ha sido capaz de legar esta música genial al mundo.

TMC: Vivaldi, Paganini, Beethoven… ¡Todos ellos tocados a la velocidad de la luz! ¿Es la velocidad y la música clásica el mejor noviazgo posible?

TGK: ¡Claro! Tienes que ser todo un virtuoso para poder componer a la vez música clásica y música metal. The Great Kat es virtuosismo de guitarra y violín, es darle a la música poder, clasicismo excitante, complejidad de arreglos e inspiración musical para que el mundo pueda disfrutar. Ha habido muchas reseñas de mi último DVD en las que definen mi música como:

TMC: Desde tu punto de vista ¿Cuál es tu mejor disco?

TGK: Todos los CDs y DVDs son piezas maestras, revolucionarias, controvertidas y rompedoras dentro del mundo de las artes.

TMC: Crees que “Metal Messiah” es el más grande hit de The Great Kat?

TGK: “Metal Messiah” es del disco “Worship Me or Die”, es absolutamente brillante, un himno de metal total: “Soy tu salvador, soy tu Dios, todos debemos superarnos, metal, metal, ¡Mesías del Metal!”. Ese tema es de los principios de The Great Kat, cuando empezaba a dominar el mundo destripando con su guitarra.

 
 
TMC: ¿Cuáles son tus guitarristas favoritos?

TGK: Jimy Hendrix, Randy Rhoads y ¡THE GREAT KAT!

 
TMC: ¿Cómo eran tus shows en los 80 y cómo son hoy en día?

 
TGK: El show devastador de The Great Kat siempre es enfermizo y extravagante, hay latigazos, golpes, thrash, devastación, riff de metal, virtuosidad endemoniada en el violín, gritos y abuso total y rabioso de los esclavos que reverencian a la posesa divinidad de la guitarra, ¡The Great Kat! TMC: Muchos fans y prensa escrita te consideran una de las guitarristas más veloces del mundo. ¿Sigues entrenándote para ser más veloz?

TGK: The Great Kat practica una enorme variedad de virtuosismos y construye escalas, arpegios, estudios gracias a su técnica, tanto con la guitarra como con el violín. También transcribe las partituras de Paganini, Sarasate, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Wieniawski… a la guitarra y las tritura con ambos instrumentos, violín y guitarra. Las empiezo a construir despacio, con el metrónomo y voy aumentando el tempo con total precisión.

TMC: ¿Consideras que la escena metal de los 80 era muy machista?

TGK: The Great Kat pateó todos esos culos machistas y chovinistas con su refinada técnica de violín y su virtuosismo de guitarra, todo gracias a su impecable técnica y trabajo.
