The Great Kat - review of Beethoven's Guitar Shred DVD

After taking a few listens to this DVD, I must say that the six short pieces and bonuses leave you with your mouth hanging open; the sheer virtuosity of the woman is nothing short of flabbergasting.

The Great Kat goes into familiar territory with the S&M and religious themes (if you cannot stand the sight of blood, be warned, there is a lot here and one video is even titled "Blood".) The videos are fast, furious and relentless. She goes from guitar to violin with ease, working with precision and speed. As a Bach fan, I liked very much her rendition of the 3rd movement of the 3rd Brandenburg concerto. I have heard other versions including the famous Switched On Bach version from Wendy Carlors and Kat's version deserves a place in the list of famous interpretations of this masterpiece. I also enjoyed the Art of the Fugue, and Beethoven's 5th. Flight of the Bumblebee is also a highlight.

As for her own pieces, they are good but seem to be lacking a bit in direction, and merely seem to serve as another showpiece of her talent and as an extolation of her S&M visual style. In one of the bonus pieces, she compares herself to Joan of Arc, Teddy Roosevelt, Bach and Beethoven. Does she have that genius? Maybe. One would like to hear longer and structured compositions that would prove this assertion. She sure has the talent to do it. Maybe we will see this in a forthcoming production? Stay tuned!

All in all, I would buy this DVD if only to enjoy the display of speed, precision and power that The Great Kat brings forth with her playing. Good stuff! "BEETHOVEN'S GUITAR SHRED" DVD REVIEW IN METALANGELS PRODUCTIONS
