Extreme Guitar Shred (DVD) — The Great Kat
TPR, 2005

Julliard graduate The Great Kat delivers over-the-top shred on this brief but convincing DVD. A longtime fixture of the metal scene, Kat draws her inspiration from Dead White Males such as Beethoven and Paganini and puts Living White Males such as Vai and Yngwie to shame with her faster-than-lighting licks. One of the more confusing elements present here is Kat's mixture of extreme patriotism with extreme feminism. She waves the flag in pieces such as "Zapateado" and "War" but finds times to emasculate the masses during "Castration" and "Torture Chamber." It's not that those, uh, "ideals" can't coexist, it's just more that they blow by at such speed you can't process it all at once. And maybe that's The Great Kat's point.
Her extreme beliefs (whether political, musical, or sexual), dress and passion for her craft set her far apart from the women-who-rock herd which is often comprised of little more than pop tarts with large promotional budgets. The Great Kat is the real thing (and she'll be the first to tell you that), love her or leave her.
