ALLEGEDLY, THE SOULS OF THE DEAD would come out from their GRAVES to visit the LIVING on The Celt Festival SAMHAIN (later Christians adopted as "HALLOWEEN")!!

HALLOWEEN'S GHOSTS, GOBLINS, CEMETERIES, WITCHES, GRAVEYARDS, BLACK CATS, BATS, HAUNTED HOUSES, SKELETONS, DEVILS and SCARY STORIES originated from an ancient PAGAN RITUAL FESTIVAL, called SAMHAIN (pronounced SOW-ehn and it means "summer's end") and was celebrated by Celtic people (from Ireland) on November 1st, to brace themselves for coming winter in Ireland. During the festival of Samhain, THE SOULS OF THE DEAD supposedly visited the homes of the Celts on the Eve of Samhain and played tricks on humans to mark the diminishing sunlight. Supposedly, there were ghosts, goblins, black cats and witches flying about. The Celts thought that the dead, ghosts, witches and evil spirits roamed the earth on this day, because the barriers between the natural and supernatural were broken during Samhain. The dead were supposed to have the secrets of the future and people would consult with them and ask for guidance.

The Festival of Samhain influenced the CHRISTIAN FESTIVAL called "ALL SAINTS DAY", also called "ALL HALLOWS." All Hallow's was the holiday on November 1st, established on 700-800 AD by the Christian Church, which observed traditional games and customs. The NIGHT BEFORE "All Hallow's" was called "ALL HALLOW'S EVE" and celebrated on October 31st. The name was shorten to ALL HALLOWE'EN and then just HALLOWEEN -OFFICIALLY CELEBRATED ON OCTOBER 31st.

Early American settlers from England brought rituals, superstitions and beliefs in ghosts and witches with them to the U.S. In the 1800's, immigrants from U.K. came to the U.S. and brought their Halloween traditions with them. Germans brought their witchcraft stories and Haitian and Africans brought the voodoo beliefs about black cats, fire and witchcraft. The holiday was gradually made into a non-religious holiday in the U.S. by the late 19th century.

Today Halloween has evolved from THE SOULS of THE DEAD visiting the homes of the CELTS to "TRICK-OR-TREATERS" dressing up in costumes as ghosts, witches, black cats and demons and DEMANDING candy or an evil prank would be played upon the innocent victim.
